Artist Statement

My mission is to show up every single day and support the evolution of the soul of humanity through love, understanding and community.

My artistic focus is creating abstract and surreal works of art while sharing my journey to inspire others to explore their own creativity. I want to encourage you, my audience, to swim in the depths of your soul when trying to understand my art. I want to help you have new thoughts that lead to breakthroughs in your healing journey. I also want you to be a little confused about what you are looking at, perhaps a little disturbed, in order to start these internal conversations with hard questions.

I am inspired by all of existence but especially emotions. I deliberately span many different artistic styles and mediums, whatever is necessary to express what is being channeled through me. I think this is one of my greatest strengths. I create in an intuitive flow state and just allow the universe to speak through me, and use my open mind as well as technical and analytical abilities to create very detailed complex work.

It can takes months if not years to complete pieces. My process is not linear, I only create a piece when intuitively called to it. Often artworks are comprised of drawing, painting, photography, fractals and animation. My video art is created while in the deepest of trances as a wide-open exploration of my body and spirit.

I believe what I create was meant to exist in this realm.

Artist Background

Sonja Joy has been creating in many forms all her life. Her mother taught her to draw at a very young age, wetting her appetite for visual expression. Her first real muse was a skeleton from the encyclopedia, then Eddie from Iron Maiden. :-)

Sonja began seriously pursuing art in 2015, shortly after her life changed dramatically when she had twins. She needed a new outlet for expression. She discovered her obsession with macro photography and viewing the world around her in a new way. Her art expanded quickly to include poetry, digital paintings, fractals, animation and video.

In 2021 Sonja entered the NFT space, selling her paintings in the crypto community. Going by the handle @seeking_sonja on Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, Sonja documents her journey creating art: making everything from process videos, to bold gallery-ready paintings and photography, to storytelling through multi-media art and even hypnotic video art.

She was born and raised in North Dakota and currently resides in Seattle, WA. Sonja graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science from Minnesota State University of Moorhead. She worked in the corporate environment of software engineering for a decade post-college. She loved the problem solving but desired more human connection, which led her to her next career.

Sonja wanted to make a difference to people and see it with her own eyes. For the next 15 years she invested in, remodeled and operated apartment buildings in the greater Seattle area. She thrived in this role, getting her hands dirty as well as exercising her mind with numbers and problem solving. After becoming a mother, she wanted to have more time with her twin daughters, be more emotionally expressive and set an example to her daughters of how to be freely authentic. She trusted her intuition and stepped into creating art full-time.

Sonja has always had an interest in the relationship between science, nature, spirituality and the creative arts. She is extremely curious about how the world works, how things are created, how they break down and decay, forcing objects to have unusual relationships with each other, as well as how humans relate to their experiences and each other. Through her art, she began healing old traumas, and often expresses spiritual revelations in her art. She strives to hold opposing views, to feel and express both sides of a story, and show these contradictions in her art. She celebrates the beauty of contrast and chaos.

Sonja has gained hundreds of collectors for her digital artwork through the NFT community and is making her artwork available in different formats for physical art collectors. She has had her art displayed at NFT conventions in NYC and Las Vegas, in numerous cyber galleries in the crypto art community and in physical form at independent artist events in the Seattle area.
